I watched a lot of films in 2011 and I have come to the conclusion that my favorite movie of the year was Lars von Trier’s Melancholia. If not just because of the emotional connection (I left the theater with tears running down my face) it was also because this film lacked the sloppiness of some of his past films (like Antichrist, which worked as a sloppy film due to the subject matter and the emotional state the director was in at the time, but it needed more of a direction—I don’t think I was the only viewer who felt lost watching it). Also, the fact that Trier used this film as therapy to get himself out of a deep depression is poetic and shows the beautiful effects that film can have on the people who love them dearly.
